LRG Clothing (Lifted Research Group) reached out to Airplantman requesting to feature his work in their clothing catalog to showcase their unique brand of clothing alongside an equally unusual and eye-catching plant genus and display aesthetic. The result was a hip, edgy, and memorable catalogue shoot. We used our reclaimed wood series of AirplantFrame designs that include distressed wood both stained and unstained to bring some history and character to their photos. The contrast of the mirrored finish, cool clothes, and Airplantman unique designs was a hit and the client was thrilled with how the catalog came together. Skateboarders and surfers rejoice!
This project features a wide variety of Tillandsia including tectorum, concolor, stricta, ionantha, paucifolia, bergeri, and one of our all time favorites stricta 'amethyst'. This cultivar has nearly black leaves that are drop dead gorgeous. Sculptural and whimsical doesn't begin to do justice to the beauty of this incredible genus in the Bromeliad family. With over 600 species to choose from there are endless ways to create striking living art and keep us inspired!
This design of Airplantman's features a removable inner frame made of steel hanging within the outer wood frame. When it comes time to water we thought long and hard for this design concept. While we love wood the secret to long term success of any Tillandsia or air plant display is waterproof durability. Air plants require frequent wetting and drying to be healthy so a wood frame getting wet every time the plants are watered was not an option. Adding both an aesthetic reveal and functional improvement Airplantman's design features an inner metal removable frame that pops out when time to water. This is lighter and easier to handle while preserving the longevity of the wood component. We love how the gap adds more lightness to the piece, further enhancing the 'floating' feeling anchored to a solid base we often seek to create in our work. Form and function coming together is always a good thing!
