Century City, California
A Grid Apart
Airplantman's striking installation for Westfield Mall located in Century City is enjoyed by diners and shoppers alike. Created in collaboration with landscape architecture firm Office of James Burnett (OJB) the design includes a series of our unique AirplantFrames in an open grid pattern floating above a reclaimed wood backdrop and surrounded by built in benches and seating. This piece was part of the Westfield massive capital improvement for the site which transformed the project into a world class outdoor shopping/retail, food, and office location drawing visitors from throughout Los Angeles and the world. The food court is a destination in itself and our work provides an eye catching element of green to the space that per our usual elevates the typical mall plant display to a unique design element. The landscape architect had a vision of a series of floating air plant frames recessed in a niche with stadium seating for guests to hang out on and enjoy catching up on email, eat a quick meal, or meet with friends. We love when our work is integrated into people spaces, bringing an element of both design and nature that always resonates and invites lingering and relaxation. Countless studies have shown the value or plants in increasing human happiness and contentment and for this reason throughout history they have been integrated into the most successful architectural interventions. Our challenge knowing the opportunities and constraints of Tillandsia or air plants was longevity as this client chose not to incorporate an automatic irrigation system or grow lights. In instances like these we use a 'swapping' system of maintenance relying on air plants resilience to handle less than ideal conditions for several weeks. On a regular rotation we swap the light frames for a second set that lives in our nursery receiving ideal light, air circulation, and water. This makes each site visit fast and clean and keeps the same set of plants happy over a long period of time. We always celebrate air plants as a more sustainable option for both water use and long term health than traditional floral displays or green walls. In this instance our goal was to combine these elements with a unique and memorable installation that is iconic to this location and with an elevated design aesthetic to set it apart from the competition!
